Capitol Hills’ Kindergarten beginnings
Kindergartners have a very large transition when they first
start school. The days are longer, there
are more expectations, and new people to interact with. A large majority of there is spent mapping
out new social structures with friends and teachers. At Vermont Hills we try to make their
transition in the afternoon as smooth as possible.
Our groups are divided up by age, so all the kindergartens
are in one group. This allows them to make
bonds easily with one another.
The teachers choose age appropriate games that allow students
to practice following the rules, number memorization, counting, and team
work. In the photo students are playing
a game of “What Time is it Mr. Fox?”.
In this game they ask Mr. Fox what time it is and the teacher states a
number. Students then take that many
steps towards Mr. Fox. If the teacher
responds with Dinner Time, then they must run back to the wall before being
tagged.
What are some things you do with your Kinder to get them
ready for the new school year? Leave
your suggestions below for other parents to consider as well.
