Wrapping up the Summer with an Exclusive Interview with VHFLC Camper, Isis

It felt like summer break would last forever! But the school year is fast approaching, and with that comes the end of VHFLC summer camps ('til next year!). As with every summer, it's been such a wonderful experience for us to watch our campers grow and learn. In honor of our special campers, we thought we'd wrap up this last day of camp with an exclusive interview from VHFLC camper, Isis!

Isis, above, with her one-of-a-kind spaceship. Note that this expertly crafted machine comes fully equipped with water, medicine, and – most crucially – a pizza button.

Isis is a firecracker. Not only has this nine-year-old already gotten around to building one of the most progressive spacecrafts of our time (it comes with a pizza button), but she's a trend-setter and a pioneer. Last school year, her decision to trade in her long locks for a bold pixie cut started a class-wide movement, during which 10 schoolmates ultimately donned the same look. She has a passion for botany and dreams of one day helping others to appreciate the beauty and purpose of all "pretty flowers."

What do you love doing?
“I love reading, listening to music, helping my parents make food (especially chicken strips!), going to the park, and swimming.”

What is the best thing about the summertime?
“Playing at the park. And also swimming. And reading. That’s my three favorite things.”

How did you like your time at VHFLC camp?
“It was awesome, and all of the teachers were really nice. I especially loved Desiree, Megan and Sam they were all really fun and nice!”

What did you enjoy the most?
“Going outside to play.”

Did you build/create/craft something that you loved? What was it?
“Spoon puppets and my spaceship!”

Is there anything important that you feel like you learned?
“That there are lots of cool kids to make friends with. I made at least four new friends at camp.”

Any ideas on how you might use this in life?
“It makes me super excited for school to start, so I can make even more friends!”

Do you feel like VHFLC camp helped you learn anything about yourself?
“I learned that I really like performing. We made spoon puppets and we put on a bunch of puppet shows. It became one of my favorite things to do.”

If you were the creator of your own camp, what would it be like?
“Every Friday we would go for a hike, and we would walk and explore and if we found pretty flowers we would take books with us to know what the flowers are to find out what they do and what they’re good for. And swimming would be twice a week, on Wednesdays and Mondays. And Thursday would be just a day where we’d play outside all day, and bring out our snacks, like Vermont Hills camp. That’s my summer camp. Oh, and on Thursday, we would also play zombie tag. It’s something we learned at Vermont Hills and it was so awesome.”

Thanks so much, Isis! We loved learning about your interests and experiences, and hope you'll be back again to join us next year!
