Vose – Monsters and Horns

For our first entry, we thought we’d make a visit to Vose Elementary School, where a little bird (Regional Supervisor Ashley Kersey.) told us that site teacher Ryan S. and his kids were planning on making cardboard horns and Halloween-y monsters with paper, strings and googly eyes.

When we arrived, everyone was excitedly trying out their creations. Cypress A. was quick to toot his own horn, and rightfully so! A thousand kazoos couldn’t rival the sound his contraption let forth. Soon Will K. joined in the fun, and before we knew it, the two-man band was harmonizing effortlessly.

Spying some action out of the corner of our eyes, we made our way over to where all the craft magic was happening. “I like making airplanes and playing with my friends," said Marco D., as he toyed with a wooden eyeball. “But I also really like to make pictures of ghosts.” The spooky picture he showed us (sandwiched between the group’s other imaginative Halloween scenes) certainly didn’t disappoint.

“What are you making?” we asked Shayira J., who was sitting down and working diligently on a three-eyed specimen. “It’s my monster”, she replied. Emphasizing the glamorous nature of her popsicle stick spook, she added: “Her name is Lady Gaga.”

“Don’t forget me!” Said a little hand puppet bouncing up and down next to Shayira. Come to find Hailey A. providing a little creative inspiration from below the table...

It's always a good time for a puppet show when Hailey is under the table!

Ella E. multi-tasked, floating between the craft table and a beanbag chair comfortably posed against the wall. She held a French book up to her nose. “It’s good here because you can learn new things and get work done too. Right now I’m focusing on new languages.”

We left feeling that we had learned a new language with such a complex symphony of toots echoing behind us. We’re excited for our next site visit and to see what else VHFLC kids are up to!
