VHFLC Celebrates Week of the Young Child

Each year, VHFLC's Early Childhood Education department commemorates the NAEYC's Week of the Young Child (WOYC) by hosting various events and workshops geared towards bolstering our parent-child community and involving families in the classroom environment.

This year, not only did we invite families into our ECE sites for "Family Friday", but we also welcomed them to view and participate in any of our activities during "Music Monday", "Taco Tuesday", "Work Together Wednesday", or "Artsy Thursday". Additionally, on April 9 (the Saturday before Week of the Young Child) our ECE directors hosted a "Family Morning In" brunch and workshop, during which speaker Dr. Lynn Collins gave an informative talk on 'surviving and supporting the emotions of young children', and during which families had the opportunity to sit with each other and discuss their own personal experiences and techniques.

So take a peek at some of our snapshots from this fun and celebratory week! We had a great time not only getting to know each other a little more deeply, but also demonstrating and developing our skills together.

The babies enjoy making guacamole too

Squeezing limes can be hard with tiny hands!

For "Work Together Wednesday", VHFLC babies made a sticky collage while the older children designed a mural with fabric flowers to put together on "Artsy Thursday". It was really fun to look at all the different options we could make with the tools we had!

Our big kids learned that it's much easier to get a project done when it's done together!

Some of our parents came in and read to our preschool classes

For "Artsy Thursday", everyone worked hard to orchestrate an epic mixed-media art show. We showcased photographs, paintings, drawings, sculptures and even 'about the artist' features with quotes. Everyone had something special to say, including 2-year-old Eliana, who noted: "Creativity is messy, and I am very creative!"

For those of you who made it over, thanks for stopping by! And if not, we hope you enjoyed this little glimpse of our WOYC festivities. We always love experiencing the warmth and creativity of our VHFLC community.
