Volunteer to Make a Difference in a Child's Life!

Did you know that Vermont Hills Family Life Center is looking for volunteers? If you love working with children and giving back to your community, then this could be the perfect experience. Our volunteers get to spend time with VHFLC children doing creative and educational projects, helping with homework, playing group and sports games, and so much more.

At one of our school sites, the local high school science club volunteers to lead experiments with VHFLC kids almost every week. They have also visited our winter break locations for some passionate song and ecological fun (see below)! With our volunteers who are also students, it is often the case that they are able to fulfill graduation requirements for community work through this time spent volunteering.

In order to qualify to be a VHFLC volunteer, you must be in 8th grade or older (aside from this, we accept all age ranges!). Contact our recruiter Ashley to see what information is needed to further your volunteer application process. Once you are accepted into our volunteer program, we always do our best to be flexible in order to accommodate your schedule. You can opt to contribute anywhere from one hour once a month, to every week if you desire. Just provide us with a few days' notice on the days that you would like to volunteer, so that we can give our teachers the time they need to prep and to possibly plan a more in-depth activity.

VHFLC aftercare teachers and volunteers play a vital role in the overall well being and development of children. Studies have looked at a number of reasons behind the positive impact of aftercare, especially as it relates to the 40 developmental assets (criteria for predicting the success of children later in life). One of these assets is the ongoing presence of 'adult role models'. This, in large part, is at the heart of what our
volunteers supply during VHFLC events and programs. Not only do volunteers enrich the lives of children through mentorship, but they also help develop a variety of crucial skills through guided activities designed to foster abilities ranging from creative, to social, to science and literature-based.

Our volunteer science team explains the water cycle to young VHFLC learners.

“A caring adult (the asset builder) provides the gateway to the ‘promises’ or the ‘assets’ children need to succeed," The CEO of America’s Promise says. “Too many young people don’t have enough access to relationships with stable, caring adults who can help them get what they need to stay on track toward graduation and career. Relationship poverty is not a lack of love or family, but a lack of access to additional sources of support that can lead to a more promising future.”

From our teachers, to office staff, to regional supervisors and volunteers, we here at Vermont Hills Family Life Center want only the best for the children entrusted to our care. As a part of our volunteer family, you can make a measurable difference in kids' lives (often leading to personal growth and discovery as well!). If this position interests you, please email Ashleyk@vhflc.com for more information and to see which volunteer locations are available near you.
